Anxiety disorders are real, serious medical conditions. Anxiety disorders are the most common and pervasive mental disorders in the United States.


The term "anxiety disorder" refers to specific psychiatric disorders that involve extreme fear or worry and includes generalized anxiety disorder (GAD),  panic disorder and panic attacks, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, selective mutism, separation anxiety, and specific phobias.


All anxiety disorders have one thing in common: persistent, excessive fear or worry in situations that are not threatening. 


People can experience one or more of the following symptoms:


Emotional symptoms:

  • Feelings of apprehension or dread
  • Feeling tense and jumpy
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Anticipating the worst and being watchful for signs of danger

Physical symptoms:

  • Pounding or racing heart and shortness of breath
  • Upset stomach
  • Sweating, tremors and twitches
  • Headaches, fatigue and insomnia
  • Upset stomach, frequent urination or diarrhea
